Megan Schmit (’18) Working at Providence Media

“My start at Providence Media has been the culmination of everything I’ve worked and hoped for, and more. I knew through my studies at Wake that I wanted to find a career in editorial, and jumped at the offer of an Assistant Editor position at the place I’d previously interned for. It’s been nearly four months now, and my experience has been incredible. Our company publishes four monthlies and a quarterly state-wide magazine, and within my first two months I took on the front-of-book sections of two (The Bay, So Rhode Island) and the calendars for four. I am tasked with mining for story ideas – think small businesses, local artists, and anything up-and-coming, unknown, or interesting in the area – assigning them to writers, editing them along with other pieces produced by the team, and a lot of times, writing some. Our staff is small – the editorial team is comprised of just four of us – so I get the chance to input my thoughts on cover stories, features, cover designs, layouts, assignments, and more. The dynamic is fast-paced and collaborative – a creative space that I absolutely love.

My proudest accomplishment thus far is the cover story I wrote just two weeks into the job: Made in the East Bay. In it, I got the chance to interview four local makers and really showcase the artistic and entrepreneurial spirit of the state”
