The Old Gold & Black recently traveled to New York City for the College Media Association’s national spring conference and returned with two national honors.
An Old Gold & Black opinion piece written by Opinion Editor Lauren Carpenter while she was still a staff writer earned first place in the opinion category. In the article, she shares her story of surviving sexual assault. With brilliance and courage, she writes about the post-traumatic stress that made her social and academic life at Wake Forest more difficult. She argues that no student should ever have to endure what she did, but those who do should not have to relinquish privacy to receive academic accommodations from professors.
Additionally, the fall 2022 issue of the Old Gold & Black’s arts and culture magazine, The Magnolia, took second place for best magazine. The magazine was founded in the spring of 2022 by senior Selinna Tran. The fall issue highlighted unappreciated voices and spaces at Wake Forest, including stories of international students, campus workers, and Black women in the STEM field, among other inspiring stories of people and groups who often get overlooked. The Magnolia’s next issue will be released at the end of this summer.
