Julia Haines (’19) is currently working as a Data Editor with U.S. News & World Report. As such, she covers a wide range of topics, including health, policy, education, foreign aid and labor. She conducts data analysis both for investigative articles and for rankings projects such as Best States, Best Countries and Healthiest Communities. Below is a message from Julia:
I greatly appreciates the diligence, transparency and support that my team at U.S. News & World Report brings to data journalism coverage, and have enjoyed facing the challenges the role has brought since I started in October 2022.
Prior to stepping into this position, I worked as a data analyst with the U.S. Air Force, and earned a Master’s degree from the Air Force Institute of Technology. Over the past year, I have also done freelance reporting with the Dayton Daily News, which allows me to investigate topics affecting my local community in Ohio. Most recently, my team was an Ohio APME award finalist for their reporting on how the pandemic affected vaccination rates among local school children.
I am thankful to both the Wake Forest student newspaper and the Wake Forest Journalism Program for preparing me for a career in journalism. Both helped to foster reporting and writing skills alongside creative curiosity and community engagement. My experience with the Old Gold & Black was an invaluable part of my time on campus, and I am incredibly grateful to the team of students and faculty who make that publication possible.
I am also thankful for Wake Forest’s unique encouragement of cross-disciplinary interests, which allowed a STEM major such as myself to simultaneously pursue journalism and land in data journalism.
