Editorial page editor at the Winston-Salem Journal joins journalism adjunct faculty

Allen Johnson, executive editorial page editor of the News & Record in Greensboro, joined to the Jorunalism faculty and will teach a “deep dive” on race and the media in the fall.

Johnson also is in charge of the opinion pages of the Winston-Salem Journal. That means he writes columns and editorials as well as edits other opinion content for both papers. Before joining the News & Record, he was editor of a local Black weekly, the Winston-Salem Chronicle, for nearly seven years, during which it won more than 70 state and national awards.

Johnson has taught at several area colleges and universities, including N.C. Central University, Winston-Salem State University, UNC-Greensboro and UNC-Chapel Hill.  He also has taught a short course for newsroom executives in the south-central African nation of Zambia, formerly Northern Rhodesia.

Johson is a Greensboro native who received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill. Despite reliably unreliable knees,  he is an avid runner, a disciple of 1970s funk (they don’t make ’em like that anymore) and, having never completely grown up, a model train enthusiast.
