Mandy Locke, an adjunct instructor in the journalism program, is chronicling failed criminal justice reform in North Carolina. Locke, a former investigative reporter for the (Raleigh) News & Observer, secured a grant from the Pulitzer Center to investigate law enforcement power and abuses. Locke’s work has been published by members of the North Carolina News Collaborative, a coalition of 23 news organizations across the state. Locke’s December report revealed how the powerful sheriffs’ lobby pushed for roadblocks to a family’s ability to review body camera footage of a relative’s encounter with law enforcement. In April, Locke detailed how lawmakers made secret information about police brutality after activists’ calls for greater transparency.
